In this beginner’s class led by artist Alex Czinczel, you will learn two decorative ways of sewing a book, Coptic and Japanese.
Coptic binding is an ancient technique originating in Egypt; the sewing on the spine of the book is exposed and the book lies completely flat when opened, unlike conventional casebound books, making it a good choice of binding for sketchbooks.
The Japanese technique is useful for binding single sheets. The basic stitch is very simple but there are variations that are slightly more complex and look very decorative. We will use decorative patterned paper to make covers and you can experiment with different colour threads.
All materials are included but you can bring your own decorative papers or single sheets that need binding if you have some. You will go home with at least two beautiful finished books.
