In this class led by artist Alex Czinczel, you will learn how to make a beautiful Solander box, useful for storing all sorts of things or wonderful as a gift.

A solander box (or clamshell box / drop-back box) is perfect for keeping delicate books, prints, ephemera or photographs safe and tidy. This style of box has been used for archiving since the mid eighteenth century, providing a strong and safe way to conserve papers. In this workshop you will learn how to hand make a Solander box from greyboard, bookcloth and paper. The inside of the box can be lined with plain or patterned paper.

The box you’ll make during the workshop will be large enough to hold items up to A5. Once you’ve learnt this skill you’ll be able to continue at home, scaling the technique up to make any custom size of box.

All materials will be provided, but if you have a particular patterned paper you would like to use for the inside of the box, please bring it with you. Acid-free paper is best for these boxes, in order to conserve the materials you wish to store inside them.

Suitable for complete beginners, and those with some experience of bookbinding.
