Covid-19 update: We are currently running open access for existing members on a pre-booking basis only. Sessions can be booked 2pm – 5pm / 6pm – 9pm on Wednesdays or 11am-2pm / 3pm-6pm Saturdays. If you would like to book, or are not already a studio member and would like to be notified when we widen access to new members, please get in touch via the Contact Us page.
Self-guided open access sessions in our print studio include use of the: etching press, book press, screen printing equipment, vacuum beds, fabric printing table, thermofax, letterpress, solar plate exposure unit, Risograph, Print Gocco and heat press equipment.
Wednesday is our regular open access day, and you can drop in between 11am and 9pm. If you want to use a vacuum bed or textile table, it’s best to book these in advance by emailing or phoning us. Alternatively, as a regular user of the space, you can request a booking for any other time Monday to Sunday and we’ll arrange it if possible. There is no membership fee, but you are required to undergo an induction for £15 on the first visit if you have not previously attended one of our courses.
Open Access cost: £15 for up to 3 hours, then £5 for each further hour.
We are open every week apart from over the Christmas and new year period.
Our presses are also available for hire by groups or clubs for half or full days.
Hire of print studio: day rate £60 / half day £40
A technician is on hand during open access sessions but these are not taught classes, you will need to be able to use the equipment on your own. If you need extra help, you can arrange one to one support for £15 per hour.
If you have experience of intaglio printing but could use some help improving your technique, etching artist Jane Furst runs one to one sessions by request. Jane can give advice, demonstrate techniques, and will have her collection of etching tools on hand for use in these sessions. Price is £10 on top of the open access session fee.
Light use of inks for etching and relief printing is included, and system 3 acrylics and binders for screen printing on paper or textiles can be purchased on the day. Coating with photo emulsion costs £3 per A2 screen, and we can prep screens with emulsion to be waiting for you for £9 per screen.
We carry a range of printmaking papers for sale, please ask if there is something specific you would like us to get in stock. Normally we have Bread & Butter Edition 270 gsm cartridge, SouthBank 250 gsm cartridge, Hahnemuhle Etching 300 gsm, Fabriano Rosaspina 285 gsm, BFK Rives 250 gsm, JPP Mould Made 285 gsm, newsprint and acid free tissue.
If you haven’t taken one of our short courses, you will need an induction before you can use the equipment during open access for the first time, to check that you have the required skills to work safely on your own. Inductions are £15 per person.
Contact us to reserve a time slot for use of a vacuum bed or fabric printing table for screen printing, or the Risograph machine. It is helpful for us to know if you plan to come along to use the etching press, Print Gocco, Thermofax equipment, heat press or letterpress facilities, but you can usually just drop in for these. If you want to be sure there will be space for you – book sessions by email and pay on the day.
Cost: £15 for up to 3 hours, then £5 for each further hour.
- Some materials are available to purchase from the studio manager, but you can bring along your own inks, papers, textiles, photo emulsion etc if you prefer.
- We use water-based inks in the screen printing studio, please contact us if you want to use oil based inks as you will need to arrange a separate session from those using water based inks.
- Drop in to have a look at the print studio equipment if you want to check if it’s right for you – or if you’re just curious! We’re around most weekdays and some weekends, but please contact us first before making a long trip.
