Screen Printing – one day course
Sunday 19 May 2024
Saturday 20 July 2024

£75
11am – 5pm

Venue: Intra Arts
Suitable for ages 16+
Class size 5 max.

Screen printing offers many creative ways to develop editions of artworks. In this one-day workshop you will learn a key screen printing technique –  how to create photo stencils. This is a hands on session that will take you through the whole process and arm you with tips to get the best results.

With this technique you make a stencil using a photographic process. Marks can be textured or clean line, large blocks of colour or fine detail. The original artwork is created in black and white, and the stencil can be printed in a single colour or a gradient of colours.

About the course:

The day begins with discussion of the process, and screen printed examples, to see the range of marks that you can reproduce with screen print design and learn some of the pitfalls to avoid. No experience is necessary, the class is suitable for beginners, and those wanting to refresh their screen printing skills.

Then it’s on to reclaiming a screen with a high pressure washer, so that it is clean and ready to use.

We’ll coat the dry screens with photo emulsion, and while they’re drying in the dark, start preparing your artwork – usually at a choice of A4 or A3 in size.

Exposing the screen on the light box is next, then washing it out to create the stencil. Finally we’ll be printing the screen onto your choice of paper or textiles.

We have fabric printing tables, or you can opt to use a printing board with hinge clamps for work on paper.

We’ll take a break for lunch (there are cafes and shops nearby) and hot drinks are available all day.

After taking this course, participants can book our open access sessions to continue working with the equipment in our screen printing studio. To develop your skills further, we offer one to one training in screen printing, and we occasionally schedule a second day class.

Artwork

You can either bring along artwork to use, or create / copy something on the day. The general rule for screen printing is to use clear black and white line art with good contrast, and avoid grey tones and shading. If you choose a photograph to work with it will need to be processed to more of a contrasty photocopy style. The dark areas should be as black as possible on inkjet print outs. You can bring along images on a memory stick, or print outs at A3 size (or two images at A4). If you don’t have your own design to work with, you can pick something from the studio’s design library with hundreds of illustrated and vintage books. Drawings with black Indian ink or chinagraph pencil on thin (80gsm) paper also work well with the screen printing process.

  1. Hi
Just wondered if you could let me know when you Screen Printing workshop starts up again please. I realise there is a lockdown at the moment and not possible but would like to book as soon as they begin again or go on the waiting list.
    Regards Sarah David

    • Hi Sarah
Thanks for getting in touch, and it’s encouraging that you’re keen to get going with screen printing. I’ll add you to a list of people interested in taking the class and will let you know when we start them again. I’m guessing we’ll be limiting the classes to 4 people and everyone will most likely be required to wear a mask and distance as much as possible during the classes when we’re allowed to gather again. Please can you drop me a line at medwayfineprintmakers@gmail.com so I can email you directly regarding the course?
Best wishes and I hope you’re not finding things too bad in these strange times. Xtina
