Make a lightweight thermofax silkscreen stencil from your own artwork using this super easy screen printing method. Print with water-based screen printing inks and take the screen and squeegee away to print with at home.
Thermofax screens are much like regular screen printing photo stencils, but are made with a thermal method to open up the design on the screen mesh.
They use lighter frames and squeegees, so are great if you find larger wooden or metal screen printing frames difficult to work with.
A great method for artwork with line art and solid colour, thermofax offers an instant solution for screen printing smaller work. It’s possible to keep a whole selection of these screens in a shoebox ready for the next time you need them.

To make the stencils, we use a digital screen maker called a MiScreen made by Riso – making this a close relation to the Risograph printing method.
The screens are quick to make, last well, are very easy to store, and can be reused again and again. Use your screen to print party invites, t-shirts, birthday cards, bags, fabric, stationery and wrapping paper etc.
In this workshop led by Xtina Lamb, you’ll expose the heat sensitive screen mesh with your own artwork, stretch it on a plastic frame, then print onto paper, card or textiles using a squeegee and one ink colour at a time.
Workshop includes:
- Create and keep a thermofax screen and squeegee
- Use your own artwork or source an image from the studio’s design library
- Print onto paper, card or textiles
- Troubleshooting tips
- Look at examples of other ways you can use your screen,
It’s a small group so you’ll have individual attention, and all the materials are included in the price. No printing experience is necessary.
Artwork
On booking you will be sent details of the types of artwork that work best with this system. You can bring along artwork to use or create or copy something on the day. The general rule is to use clear black and white lineart with good contrast, and avoid grey tones and shading.
You can bring along images on a memory stick, or print outs at up to A5 size (approx 15cm x 21cm).
If you don’t have your own design to work with, you can pick something from the studio’s design library with hundreds of illustrated and vintage books.

Where does the name Thermofax come from?
Thermofax is a generic term for screen printing systems using a heat sensitive mesh, made popular in the 1980s by Riso and the Print Gocco system, but machines made by 3M and Panenka were also used to make thermofax screens.

Where can i get rolls of the screen material for my sp275?
Also it wont flash when i engage the handle down? Thanks
Hi Steve
Maybe try Welsh Products in the US?
I’m afraid I can’t help you with the servicing issue, but maybe XpressScreen folks can suggest something.
Hello… been looking for the blue mesh for my thermofax. Seems Riso has changed over to a white mesh which I am not fond of.
Would you know anyone who sells the blue mesh 100 count?
Thank you,
Mary
Hi Mary
The blue mesh is discontinued but there are still supplies of the 70 count around. I don’t know anywhere with the 100 count now sadly. I’ve moved over to using the white mesh with my Riso Screenfax, in 70 and 120 count. Try here for blue 70 mesh.

Thanks so much… just emailed them.
