Fred Wyver shows the intricate skills and techniques involved in bookbinding. All materials are included and you can expect to come away with at least one sketchbook or similar made by your own fair hands.
Fred’s own books range across hardback and weighty tomes, ones made from maps, experimental editions, and beautiful albums for wedding gifts. You can often see him selling his books at the Rochester Flea market.
Starting from the very basics this course will introduce beginners to the craft of bookbinding. Through practical projects you will be covering the fundamental concepts and techniques required to produce attractive durable books. Whether you want to bind your own novel or make your own sketchbooks this course will set you on the right path.
You will be introduced to traditional tools including awls, bone folders and binders paste and learn why they are still used. After a short induction you will begin to create bound booklets starting with the most simple stitches, following on to a choice of more complicated constructions.
Tools and materials will be provided. If you wish to bring along your own papers or cards to use in your bindings you are welcome to. Your tutor will be happy to advise you on any personal projects you have in mind. Please bring a sharp pencil, a 1″ household paintbrush and a ruler and set-square if possible.
This course is for complete beginners, no previous experience is necessary.
Due to the use of sharp tools this course is not suitable for children.
