Silkscreen printing offers many creative ways to develop editions of art and textiles. In this four week series of hands on evening classes you will go through the whole process and learn key screen printing techniques including:

  • creating & printing A3 photo stencils
  • creating & printing hand cut stencils
  • printing with solid colours and blends
  • lining up multiple layers in one print (registration)

The course is suitable for beginners and those wanting to refresh their screen printing skills. All materials are provided, but you can also bring along any special papers or textiles of your own to print on.

In the first class there is a discussion of the process and study of example artworks, to see the range of marks that you can reproduce with silkscreen designs. Then it’s on to reclaiming a screen with a high pressure washer so that it is clean and ready to use. We’ll also begin to prepare your artwork ready for exposure.

Nextscreenprinting on fabric lesson we coat the dry screens with photo emulsion, expose the screen to light, and wash it out to create the stencil. Then we’ll be printing the screen onto your choice of paper or textiles.

In lesson three you’ll get a chance to improve and develop your printing skill, and you can choose from a number of options on making a second stencil. You might hand cut a paper stencil, use a digital cutter, or expose a second photo stencil. screen printed pistolWe’ll look at ways to line up a second screen, create backgrounds and print layers using registration techniques.

The final class will see you completing your prints and using any of the techniques you haven’t yet tried. The lesson can follow your choice of direction, and we welcome experimentation!

Open access sessions are available at the studio once you have completed a screen printing course, and to those with recent screen printing experience. This course will enable you to gain the confidence needed to use the equipment on your own in the open access sessions.

We have vacuum screen printing beds, and for textile printing there are large cloth covered printing tables. We use all water based inks.
