Medway Print Festival 2020

For Medway Print Festival 20, we’ve created a series of video tutorials and conversations with printmakers, to make up part of the ‘Lockdown Edition’ of this annual printmaking festival. We’ll be releasing them on our Medway Print Festival page from 6th – 21st June 2020, and hope you enjoy them! Many thanks to Medway Council’s Arts Development Team for commissioning us to make these videos.

We’ll be sharing three video printmaking tutorials, mostly using things commonly found at home, and focusing on tweaks of techniques that usually require a press: etching, lithography and relief printing. In these tutorials Xtina Lamb has fun showing you how to use make-shift equipment, and get great results with surprising materials.

In three ‘in conversation‘ videos, Xtina discusses techniques with printmakers who use particular methods, getting their personal takes on linocut (Nick Morley), screen printing (Rachel Moore and Francesca Baur), and mono-printing and collagraph (Kristiina Sandoe).

Please share the Medway Print Festival website and activities, and use the hashtag #mpf20lockdown. We’d love it if you could post photos of any prints that you’ve made during the festival.

Whittle & Daub – Paul Jerome Exhibition

Whittle and Daub, Printmaking by Paul Jerome, hares fighting

We’re really pleased to announce that ‘Whittle & Daub’, an exhibition of prints by Paul Jerome, will be on show from Tuesday May 1st to Sunday July 1st 2018 in INTRA’s workspace and windows. There will be a private view at 18:30 on Friday 4th May, all are welcome and you’ll be able to meet Paul and talk to him about his work.

Paul has created intricate artworks on some of his favourite themes: folklore, customs, green men, hares, owls and foxes, landscapes, animals that were sent into space, and vintage cars. His work has been really popular at our regular Wayzgoose print fairs.

Paul is a regular user of the Medway Fine Printmakers studio at INTRA. He’s recently been experimenting with textile repeat patterns and heraldic imagery. He has employed many of the techniques available at our studio, including linocut, Risograph, collagraph prints and screen printing.

There will be a custom made window display, an invasion of papier mache creatures, and a beautiful leaflet to accompany the show. We’re excited to see it all springing up in the workspace, in the highly appropriate month of May and just in time for Rochester Sweeps festival.

Because we’ll all be in a festive mood, and as it is a traditional fair, there will be a tombola with prizes both fantastic, and fantastically rubbish. Buy a 20p ticket or 6 for a pound and you could bag the most bargainous course booking, a gorgeous piece of art… or if less lucky, perhaps a knitted toilet roll cover, or bizarre-sounding exotic tinned food.

Tea or coffee with biscuits will be available for £1.

Money raised from the fair will go towards running the Medway Fine Printmakers and Hazelnut Press print studios.

Get Creative Medway – open day

Coloured vinyl stickers in stars and other shapesOn Thursday, February 6th we’ll be opening the doors at INTRA from 10am – 7pm, to discuss the forthcoming Get Creative Medway map.

The project has been funded by Ideas Test and will result in a free paper map that showcases arts and community venues throughout the Medway Towns, and an online version too.

You’ll be able to see where you can take creative courses and workshops, access arts facilities and equipment, hire spaces for club meetings, and take part in creative activities during festivals and events. We’ll also be listing people who run creative activities (for people of all abilities) in various local venues.

So far we have located activities including: arts & crafts, printmaking, sculpture, creative writing, recording studios, dressmaking, icon painting, watercolour painting, drama, dance, orchestras, photography, quilting, floral art, digital media, bookbinding, ceramics, film making, jewellery design, costume design, life drawing, felt making and more.

During the open day we will show the work in progress on the map, and invite passers-by to take part in a vinyl sticker cutting activity to decorate one of INTRA’s shop windows. We’ll be asking what creative activities they would most like to do and reflecting this in the stickers.

If you are interested in the map, have suggestions for venues to include, run workshops yourself, or just fancy cutting out some stickers – pop in and see us on Thursday.

INTRA, 337 – 341 High Street, Rochester, Kent, ME1 1DA
We are between Rochester Station and Chatham High Street, two doors away from the Ship pub, near Cycle King bicycle shop.
